Our Specialty

At Jagannath’s Tesori, we specialize in Traditional Mysore and Thanjavur paintings, two unique yet related styles of traditional Indian art. These are done using real 24 & 22 karat gold leaves/foils. We also specialize in curating and customizing art for pooja room spaces.

What is the difference between the two artforms?

While the subject matter of both the artforms predominantly focus on Hindu gods and goddesses, religious and historical themes there is marked resemblance between Mysore & Tanjore paintings, where a careful observation reveals a difference between the two in many aspects.

Mysore Paintings: These are known for their intricacy and delicate line work. The gold texture is smooth, with a fine finish. The figures are delicately painted, often giving the painting a soft, ethereal appearance. The faces of the figures are highly detailed, with soft features, and the overall look is serene and refined. Gesso is used to enhance gold detailing and to give an embossed effect.

Tanjore Paintings: Tanjore paintings have a more textured surface due to the use of gold foil and raised elements. The gold detailing, along with the 3D aspects, creates a rich tactile effect. The figures are usually portrayed with a heavy, three-dimensional look, and the background is often embellished with intricate patterns and vibrant colors. The faces are also expressive but in a more dramatic and bold manner compared to Mysore paintings
